Metabolic Activities Within Our Bodies


For most living organisms, metabolism is considered life itself. The word metabolism is a Greek term that literally means change. Changing is what actually the cells are doing with the substances, transforming them from foods to molecules that our body requires to function. Foods are what we eat and not nutrients since foods that chemically complex for our cells to utilize. Breaking down these foods into much simpler substances known as nutrients is more plausible to make them available to our cells.

Vitamins, minerals and nutrients are important for our body’s metabolic activities or those chemical reactions involving the buildup or the breakdown of substances in our body. Basically, metabolism refers to the process wherein our body cells change nutrient molecules and utilize these in creating energy. These molecules are also considered as the building blocks of developing cells and tissues.
The foods we eat should undergo at least three steps so that nutrients are extracted from. Other than metabolism, these steps are digestion and absorption. Digestion begins as soon as the food is in our mouth. Our teeth, with the help of the different enzymes in our saliva, begin to break down the foods. Once the bits and pieces enter our stomach, these will be exposed to substances like gastric juices.
While in our stomach, further, the food will become chyme which is a thick liquid that will then move into our small intestine. The chyme will be broken down further to nutrient components as it is exposed to more chemicals in our gallbladder and pancreas. Food substances that cannot be used up by our body will move to our large intestine. These will be excreted by our body.
The nutrient components formed will now be absorbed into our bloodstream through our intestinal walls. Through our bloodstream, nutrients, vitamins and minerals will be then carried to each of our cells. The three commonly formed substances and which are used by our body are amino acids, glucose and fatty acids from proteins, carbohydrates and fats, respectively. Our cells metabolize these substances through a process that involves passing through our cell membranes and then to our cells. In the cells, further chemical reactions will take place.

While inside the cell, glucose molecules will be broken down so that it may release the energy. This is a process that is also known as Catholicism  On the other hand, cells may utilize the energy released during the process in building more complex molecules more so if the cell membrane is damaged and repair is a must. Such a process is called anabolism. Excellent sources of nutrients for this purpose are broccoli, potato and fish. Nutrients found from these sources are transformed into building blocks of our body. Some scientists believe that those nutrients we are ingesting can be considered as metabolic pools necessary for cell construction.
Thus, this only means that our body’s strength depends on the quality of the substances on such metabolic pool. When repairing the cell membrane, there is a need for protein molecules that will be created by means of anabolism. Various nutrient molecules are metabolized differently depending on the apparent purpose. Nonetheless, the metabolic processes of our cells are the same. We are absorbing and using nutrient molecules by millions with each meal, most of which are carried to different parts of our body though some of them are excreted. Some like proteins in addition to vitamins and minerals are also used in constructing or building up enzymes which are chemicals controlling cellular processes like catabolism and anabolism. Further, there are vitamins that are responsible for protecting our cells to damage themselves while metabolizing nutrients. These nutrients are, on the contrary, responsible for building new blood cells, muscles and bones. The nutrients fuel our cell that make such think, move and breathe. They also keep our bodies alive as they build new cells continuously as old cells die. Every second, about 2 million of our red blood cells die and 2 million of such are replaced by the cells in our bone marrow. There is therefore an ongoing need of our body of proper nutrients.
